With these end pieces, the Dream Ring can be used for making extra-small tubes.

Because the new end pieces are movable, it  simplifies decreasing so that it is easier than ever to make something like a tapered ski hat. You can decrease anywhere on the loom, by transferring a loop from one peg to another, removing that peg from the loom, then moving the other pegs down to fill in that space. You no longer need to move the loops from every peg: just move the pegs themselves with the loops still on them.

It can be adjusted to knit a tube as small as 8 pegs around.

Or, you could put all of your segments together into two long pieces and insert the two end pieces so you can knit as large a tube as you like.

Making a Tapered Ski Hat

Here is a tutorial to teach how to decrease on the Dream Ring, using the new end pieces. It was quick, easy and a lot of fun.

Although you could make the whole hat with the Dream Ring's long segments side by side, I started this hat in the round setting because that makes it easier to bring up the cuff of the hat. When I was ready to start decreasing, I  transferred about half of the pegs from the round ring onto a long segment with the curves of the two segments running parallel. I inserted the two end pieces and slipped the appropriate pegs into them.

I didn't start decreasing until the middle row of the pink section. From that point on, I decreased by 3 evenly spaced pegs in the middle row of each new colored stripe. Which means that the next decrease came in the center row of the green section.

After knitting a few more rows without decreasing, I changed to the purple yarn. When I was ready to knit the center row of the purple section, I again decreased that row by three evenly spaced pegs. It looks best to stagger which section the 3 decreases are in. It gives a more even look to the hat.

Decreasing Step by Step

To begin the decrease, remove 2 pegs that are in a different place than where you decreased the last time. Insert the loop transfer tool into the groove of one peg.

Pull the peg out of the loop.

Set the peg aside, keeping the tool inside the loop.

Let the loop transfer tool pop open and insert the bottom of the second peg into the loop from the first peg.

Remove the loop transfer tool.

Place the peg in the hole closest to the center of the loom.

Move any other pegs toward the center of the loom to fill in the gap.

In this example, there was only one peg to move. But sometimes there will be several pegs to move.

One decrease is completed. The end piece automatically follows along with the other pegs.

This shows the position of the pegs before the last decrease.

This is a close-up showing the position of the pegs after the final decrease is completed.
